You can’t tell the cultural and social history of Roanoke without telling the story of Northwest Roanoke. Artists such as Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, and James Brown wowed theatergoers along Henry Street.
Oliver Hill, who grew up on Gilmer Avenue, helped change education forever by fighting for desegregation in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case. And, of course, there’s the story of Henrietta Lacks, whose cell line led to medical
breakthroughs around the world, from the COVID-19 vaccines to new cancer treatments.
And while Melrose Plaza will be a place of history. It is also a place of community.
Where we see each citizen as a part of the tapestry we are weaving to cover a
community in health, wellness and goodwill.
