CELEBRATING A CULTURE. EMPOWERING A COMMUNITY.
The official theme for the 2026 MLK Day observance, according to The King Center, is “Mission Possible II: Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way”. This theme is a call to action to create a Beloved Community through nonviolent principles, community building, and uniting the nation.
Melrose Plaza will partner with FED UP for a hands-on public workshop on nonviolent community action.
In addition, art panels created for The Empathy Project — a community initiative that highlights the personal stories and experiences of local leaders and families affected by gun violence and encourages reflection and connection — will be on display in the atrium at Melrose Plaza from January 15 through January 24, 2026. For more details about the project’s goals and community impact, visit the Empathy Project page on the Roanoke Arts Commission website.
This will be held in the atrium of Melrose Plaza.
