Hometown Artist Chosen to Create Melrose Plaza’s Signature Mural
Artist Bryce Cobbs will bring his hometown perspective and artistic talent to Melrose Plaza as the selected muralist for the building’s landmark community art project. Born and raised in Northwest Roanoke, Cobbs brings a deep connection to the neighborhood along with his nationally recognized artistic talent. His work has been featured in major outlets, including The New York Times, NPR and CNN.
The mural will celebrate Northwest Roanoke’s legacy while embracing the neighborhood’s bright future. Drawing inspiration from the Sankofa bird—a symbol representing the importance of learning from the past—the artwork will highlight Melrose Plaza’s role in community revitalization while focusing on aspirational, forward-thinking themes.
“I am extremely humbled and excited to be the artist chosen for such a prestigious project,” says Cobbs. “Working alongside the city of Roanoke and Goodwill Industries of the Valleys is a tremendous honor that I do not take lightly. I anticipate so much support from the community and am excited to work alongside them in creating a work of art that everyone in the area can take pride in.”
The project emphasizes community engagement through a series of intimate painting sessions where community members can work directly with the artist. Residents can participate in upcoming community meetings to share input on the mural’s themes and follow the project’s progress on Facebook and Instagram.
Work on the mural will begin in April 2025, with completion targeted for summer. The project builds on Melrose Plaza’s mission to restore vital services and cultural richness to Northwest Roanoke through its comprehensive offerings of food access, healthcare, education and financial services.
