The Mural at Melrose Plaza celebrates Northwest Roanoke’s legacy while embracing the neighborhood’s bright future. Drawing inspiration from the Sankofa bird—a symbol representing the importance of learning from the past—the artwork highlights Melrose Plaza’s role in community revitalization while focusing on aspirational, forward-thinking themes.
Artist Bryce Cobbs is bringing his hometown perspective and artistic talent to Melrose Plaza as the selected muralist for the building’s landmark community art project. Born and raised in Northwest Roanoke, Cobbs brings a deep connection to the neighborhood along with his nationally recognized artistic talent.
Through a series of community meetings and online surveys, Cobbs heard the community’s hopes for the mural and designed “Rooted in Joy”, a piece that represents love, happiness, and hope. “The elements are perfect for the newly erected Market and speak to the overall goal of the Plaza to be a sustainable and long-lasting place of resources and support for the Northwest community,” says Cobbs.
Work on the mural began in April 2025, with completion targeted for Fall. The project builds on Melrose Plaza’s mission to restore vital services and cultural richness to Northwest Roanoke through its comprehensive offerings of food access, healthcare, education and financial services.
Community Paint Days
The project emphasized community engagement through a series of painting sessions in Summer 2025 where community members worked directly with the artist on the front façade.
